Question: My tortie, [an elderly cat in renal failure], I have tried the prescription food…she would graze on the dry food only.
I tried Halo a couple nights ago and I have to keep filling up her plate. So she is eating it. I am doing fluid therapy also right now. Only once ever 5 days or so, and I don’t know anything about the B vitamins though. I am so happy that she has started to eat the Halo food. I just hope she keeps going.
Answer: There are many stages of kidney disease and different treatments are recommended at different steps of the way. Make sure your vet knows if your cat is not eating well. They may want to consider more frequent fluid administration or even antacids or appetite stimulants to help support your girl.
In regards to feeding cats with kidney disease, many of us agree that it is more important that they eat a diet which is high in quality and something they will eat readily versus having a picky appetite for a prescription diet and then ultimately losing weight and muscle mass because they are not eating enough protein or calories.
